How much does a custom design cost?

How does your price compare?

The cost of your design will depend on what level of detail you want in your drawings and the complexity of your design.  New construction drawings take less time than additions, remodels and renovations. Designs for new homes or additions are calculated based on the finished square foot total of the residence (living spaces).  You can give us a call and get an estimated quote.  To get an exact quote we would require detailed information about your project.  This is the reason we offer the initial consultation at no cost.  There is no risk or obligation to you to see what we can do for you.  Learn more about WHAT IS INCLUDED.

Are there any hidden fees?

We do not have any hidden fees.  The contract is written as a ‘not to exceed’ cost estimate.  This means that no matter how much time it takes us to finish your drawings you will not pay more than the stated amount unless you diverge from the contract terms.  And you never have to worry about a surprise bill.  We are careful to notify you if something you request will lead to increased fees.

Our price for traditional construction methods is comparable to ready-made plans purchased without added options or customization.  However, if you request any customization to the ready-made plans you will see the cost go up significantly.  We have had clients who began by trying to purchase ready-made plans with minor customization.  They later abandoned the attempt and contacted us for a custom design.  What this means for you is that you can get a totally custom and unique home design for about what you would pay for the ready-made drawings.

​Non-traditional construction methods such as timber frame or hybrid timber frame would cost more for a custom design compared to a ready-made plan.

There is, of course, no design fee associated with purchasing a home package in a planned community.  However, your options are limited to a handful of designs and even the ability to personalize the house is limited to the option packages the builder offers.
